THIS JUST IN... (14/11/12): Alt-J have debuted a new track "Buffalo" featuring Mountain Man (the all-female American folk trio) set to appear on the soundtrack to the forthcoming David O. Russell film Silver Linings Playbook. Have a listen...
It doesn't have as much of an electronic hinge to it; the fusion between beats and folk having been what helped them bag The Mercury Prize, but it's lovely all the same...

Radar Recommends Alt-J
Making wild claims to your friends along the lines of ‘this album will change your life’ or ‘if you don’t hear this you might die’ sound extreme, but it’s albums like this,
An Awesome Wave debut release from UK four piece Alt-J (or ∆ - the symbol you make when you press those mac keys) that send you on an insane trajectory of random predictions like a street-corner preacher… it’s just that good.
It’s also albums like this that send critics into a mad flurry trying to pigeonhole what sound it actually is. So far, they’ve come up with: Art-rock, dub-pop, folk-step, Mumford and Sonar – okay that last one’s a joke. The allusive compounds certainly help give you a sense of Alt-J’s sound, but it really is something that’s wreathed together so many different styles and influences – it doesn’t quite fit on any pre-existing hook. And isn’t that new music at its best!
Supposedly, the ∆ symbol in mathematics indicates change, so I think we should take the bands advice and run with it.
If you already are, you can check Alt-J out this October in Sydney & Melbourne, dates below.
If not, have a listen to some of the tracks below and you’re as easily seduced as I was, get their album, An Awesome Wave is out now.
