“People are conditioned to see certain images for different genres of music,” says New York artist Outasight. “So if something looks or sounds out of the norm, it’s more difficult to understand at first.”
The 27-year-old singer (real name Richard Andrew) has a point. When we first saw him, we thought he looked like Billy Joel’s son. When we first heard him, we thought he sounded like Billy Joel’s son had been listening to Black Eyed Peas. And yet despite that, we find ourselves singing his breakthrough hit ‘Tonight Is The Night’ when we least expect it.
You might not pick it from the poppy, chart-friendly ‘Tonight Is The Night’ but Andrew, born in the awesomely-named New Yok suburb of Yonkers, grew up on hip hop and has released seven mixtapes to date. Hopefully, those roots shine through a little more on his new album due out later this year.
