Remember Jade MacRae, the Aussie R&B singer who had hits like ‘Superstar’ and ‘So Hot Right Now’ back in the mid-2000s? Well, now she’s reinvented herself as Dune, a fresh alter-ego that sees her dealing out edgy, tribal electro-pop that’s light-years away from her previous sound.
No doubt aware of her past baggage and people’s need to pigeonhole, she’s kept Dune’s identity under wraps – literally in the case of her debut video ‘Shoestring’ where she’s dressed in bandages like a manic mummy. If her identity’s meant to be a secret, don’t tell her we told you, okay?
Dune it seems was born out of a desire for new sounds and a new headspace. “I needed to isolate and go deeper into my own psyche, a place that was not always comfortable,” she explains. After building her own studio (with husband and hip hop MC Phrase), she dove right in, experimenting with songs and her love for old school synths. With the blueprint laid down in prototype single ‘Shoestring’, the next step will be touring it with a full band later this year.
