City Riots hail from Adelaide so let’s get the references/jokes about churches, Coopers and boredom out of the way early. There done, that was easy, wasn’t it? Forming in 2008, brothers Ricky and Dan met guitarist Matt and bassist Edgy at a local hang, drawn together by a love of styling haircuts, expensive gear and vintage indie-pop.
After releasing their debut EP Socialize in the same year, they found themselves overseas a year later crafting their first long-player with producer Bjorn Thorsrud (Smashing Pumpkins, The Dandy Warhols). But after getting home and hitting the road for the better part of a year, the band decided to shelve the album and continue refining tracks with Melbourne producer Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Children Collide, Hunting Grounds).
The result is their solid second EP Matchsticks and its gorgeous pop gem of a title track. Earning radio support and recent support slots with The Get Up Kids, Gyroscope and Ball Park Music, it sees the band’s patience paying off in spades.
