We’ve already written plenty about the avalanche of awesome bands tumbling out of Brisbane at the moment but seriously, what is going on up there? Did someone slip proton energy pills into their XXXX when they weren’t looking? Do a deal with the devil for sinfully good melodies and magic distortion pedals? We don’t know, but let’s just say, if there was such a thing as a Music State of Origin, the Canetoads would be thrashing everyone right about now.

The latest gem to be pulled out of Brisbane’s diamond mine is Art of Sleeping, a relatively new five-piece that’s more dreamy than dozy. Music and mood-wise, their galloping single ‘Empty Hands’ recalls the widescreen folk-rock of Boy and Bear, but it’s more wild and dramatic. Led by the emotive, rugged vocals of frontman Caleb Hodges, it’s a moving collision of pop ‘oohs’, rolling drums and keening guitar bombast. It’s the first taste of their second EP due out later this year and a delicious one at that.
